I am addicted to television….

Hi, I am Karen and I am addicted to television…

I am obsessed with “vampire shows” and “coming of age tales” ( maybe its because I secretly want to live forever). I probably watch about 3-4 hours of television a day, on weekdays and 5-6 hours a day, on the weekends (scary, I know). I thought having Netflix instead of cable would make it easier, since I will no longer have to channel surf, but it is worse. Now I could watch an entire t.v. series and stayed glued to the tube much longer(ugh). I have watched “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series about 4 times. Television used to be my escape from the world, but now it is turning into a obstacle for my success.

I am turning into a zombie…

After watching a few hours of t.v. I feel numb and irritable. My body aches from sitting down for too long. It puts me in such a funk that I don’t feel like doing ANYTHING. Worse of all, my daughter is getting a front row seat of my destructive behavior. Actually, she is joining me in my destructive behavior because we take turns watching television! When I am not watching television, it is babysitting my daughter for me. It makes me feel so guilty and it should.

Its a serious problem and I am not the only addict here. In fact, it was projected that in 2004, the average person watched about 1,669 hours of television (about 70 days){1}. Children watching television by the age of 3 increase their chances of attention problems at the age of 7{1}. Did you know that for every hour an adult, 25 years or older, watches an hour of television, their life expectancy lowers by 22 minutes {2}.This is a little crazy!

I spent a lot of time thinking this over and it became clear what I have to do…

I am going to go 30 days without  watching television.

This is an aggressive step for me. Reading the facts I shared above was motivation for me, but here are some more powerful reasons I should turn off the television:

  • Set a better example for my daughter
  • be able to spend more time with family and friends
  • spend more time learning new skills
  • more time to write for my blog
  • to feel more alive and aware
All of this is great motivation. I will admit that I have tried this before and failed (many times).  Regardless, I believe that this time will be different, because I am going to make it so hard to fail.
Below is my action plan:
1. tape newspaper around my television ( because it is too heavy for me to move lol)
2. remove my dvd/netflix player
3. take batteries out of remote
4.broadcast to the world my goal
I believe that my biggest obstacle is that it is too convenient to turn on the television. For most of us, it is the first thing we see when we walk into our homes! We even have it in our bedrooms, so its the last thing we see before we go to sleep. This is madness! All things considered, I knew I had to be aggressive by creating the plan above. So, if you want to break any addiction, put as many barriers between you and bad habit, as you can….
